Neat. I scanned through the DDS manual before I posted and didn't come across that nor, obviously, have I ever felt the need to do it. I have created new fields in a logical using the SST and CONCAT keywords. Going back to the manual, I did find the notation (pg. 23). One can even use an LF to convert a date data type to a zoned or packed field, though not the other way around, with caveats.

Thanks.

Jerry,

A DDS defined logical is somewhat equivalent to an
SQL index
or an SQL view
or an index + a view

Just like with a view you can
select digits(myFld) as myFld

you can (within reason) redefine the physical file fields in a logical.

A R MYPFFMT
A MYFLD 10S 0

A R MYLFFMT PFILE(MYPF)
A MYFLD 10A

(forgive any typos above, I've not hand coded DDS in a couple of years)

HTH,
Charles

Charles,

Would you mind giving an example. I've never come across a technique to reformat data in the logical and would like to learn how to do so.

I'm also extremely curious about PUTting an LF on System-A and being able to read the data residing on System-B. Was I incorrect when I said that an LF is nothing more than an index, which in and of itself contains no actual data? Again, I'm asking so I can learn something new - even if it throws something I thought I knew into a dustbin.

Actually it does. I've done it in the past plenty of times.

John,

I don't think that the LF would reformat the data from packed to
zoned, though I have never had reason to try. I would create a zoned
version of the file, and copy the data. The i will map the data to
the new formats.
