Dave,

We are using IBM's Tivoli Storage Manager. We are not doing full image
copies. It does a nice backup strategy. It can do all sorts of
scenarios. Like new files to disk, first previous image to online tape
library, others to offline tapes and so on.

We used to run it native on i until the director of marketing for the i
went to Tivoli and immediately dropped support for the i (Marketing i must
be considered the dungeon for IBMers). Now, it still runs on the power
boxes but must be in an AIX or Linux partition. Also runs in Windows or
on z. We run it in a dedicated Linux partition on our Power 6 570/MMA. I
couldn't tell you how to use the day-to-day. Help desk people like it for
restoring files on people's pc's.

Had Tivoli speak at our local user group and got some real nice trinkets
also. :-)

We have 3 drives on our 3576 tape drive dedicated to Tivoli on that Linux
partition. Three other drives on that same tape drive are shared among
various i based lpars via an IBM SAN switch.

There's a Tivoli list hosted by Marist.edu that makes the traffic on these
lists seem small.
