Just found out I get to (and the only hardware stuff I've ever done is
external devices, nothing in the guts) that we have 4 x 2 GB memory
sticks/cards/?? that I need to install replacing the existing 4 x 1GB.

Where's the "best" place to start....reference wise
Well if you truly want to replace...

Power Down and Unplug the system
Remove the left side cover
Blow out the dust
You'll see the 4 current DIMMs on the motherboard.
Press the while tab on both sides of 1 DIMM to pop it out. (NOTICE THE SLOT in the DIMM)
Make sure you orient the new DIMM the sameway as the OLD and press firmly in place.
Repeat for the other 3 DIMMS.
Put everything back together, plug in and power on.

Now another option is the 270 has slots for 8 DIMMs
Remove the left side cover
Blow out the dust
You'll see the 4 current DIMMs on the motherboard. You should also see 4 WHITE items covering the unused slots
Remove each white cover (NOTE where the slot is and match it with the slot on the DIMM )
Push the white tabs back on each end of a memory slot and then insert the DIMM until it seats firmly
Make sure you orient the new DIMM the sameway as the OLD and press firmly in place.
Repeat for the other 3 DIMMS.
Put everything back together, plug in and power on.

ALL DONE
