But yes, Michael, I am NOT saying define your stuff in DDL, take full use
of constraints, journalling and whatnot and you can instantly replace all
your maintenance programs with UPDDTA or Excel.
In general you will still need the strong stuff that a good maintenance
program does.

The constraints and stuff help you avoid problems caused by going outside
of the maintenance. Which often occurs with mergers, acquisitions,
consolidations and changing software packages. And you're using a
software package that uses no keys on their physicals and never specifies
unique on their logicals and wouldn't know a constraint if it bit them in
the tail. So it's quite possible to have two items with the same item
number with an on order quantity of "BLACK" and a last used date of
20080252.
