But which machines run the code?

That probably depends on the type of stream files you're working with. You might use Adobe Acrobat to read PDF files and Word to read .DOC files, for example. On the other hand, the email client that I referenced in my previous post is written in RPG, and hosted on the server. RPG is good at handling text files, like email.

Then you need a program on the PC to do the FTP
so to speak or could it be run from the i?

Again, you can do either. I often use SmartFTP - a PC based FTP client to transfer HTML, CSS, an JavaScript files from my PC to IFS folders and visa-versa.

But I use an RPG utility to upload stream files and at the same time create database entries to reference them from Web applications. Stream files may be uploaded through the HTTP Server.

If from the PC what type of Programming Language
would be doing this?

What type of applications are you interested in building? Single user or multiple user? Consider an application like Microsoft Outlook which stores email, contacts, tasks, calendars, and other data in a single stream file. Although Outlook has a look and feel of a database application, it lacks many database functions because it doesn't store data in database tables. It's limited to single users, and lacks index, search, and report capabilities.

I'm generally more interested in building multi-user database applications than stream file applications.

Nathan.
