Thanks, John and Walden. That makes perfect sense - now that it's explained to me in English. I wasn't aware of the different 64-bit Intel versions either.

Perhaps the instructions that come with System i Access ought to reference the operating system version, rather than the processor for those, like me, that are iCentric.

Subject: System i Access V6R1 Client Install

The client-side of System i Access 6.1 has three different
images; one each for 32-bit processors, AMD 64-bit
processors, and Intel 64-bit processors. The instructions in
the DVD package says to determine the processor by
right-clicking on the "My Computer" icon and getting the
processor from the 'General' tab. I did that, and my PC
says "AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 4000+" which, to me, says
"I'm a 64-bit processor."

So, when I went to upgrade my V5R4 client version I,
naturally, picked the setup.exe in the Image64a folder.
However, the install said something like, "Are you pulling my
leg or what?" So I elected to use the Image32 version.
Installed and everything seems to be working. System i
Navigator (they even changed the change in the title bar and
other places I've looked, btw) says it is V6R1 and Operations
Console says that it, too, is running V6R1.

I am running XP Pro at SP 3. I checked and it is the 32-bit version.

So my question is, is it really the processor or Windows
version that matters when installing System i Access for Windows?

Jerry C. Adams

Though I do not know for absolute, I think you are correct. The 32 vs 64
depends, not upon the actual processor, but upon the version of Windows.
Remember that the 64-bit CPUs are capable of running the 32 bit OS, but
not vice versa. I am fairly sure that all current Intel and AMD
processors are 64-bit capable. But you can only run 64 bit code if the
OS is a 64 bit OS. I don't run Windows anymore much (work desktop is
all), but I know that in Linux, if I run a 32 bit OS, I must use the 32
bit application code. There are cases where you can run 32 bit client
code on a 64 bit OS, but that involves the 32 bit application code
invoking a 32 to 64 bit "stub" routine to talk to the 64 bit OS.
