I can't say this for Affirmative (problem was on diff brand), but you will find a version of telnet is being used, and in our case it was "very old".
Our problem was in move from model 800 to the 520. No program changes.
Had to do something like a bios update to a later (but still old) version.
We eventually dumped the thin clients for reliability problems.

Subject: Odd DSPF Problem

Recently, we switched from a 9404-520 to a 9407-M15. Both systems are at
V5R4M5. PTF levels are the same.

We use a combination of PC's with Client Access and Affirmative Network
Clients to access the i5. Both Client Access and the Affirmative units
are at the latest release levels.

We have a number of programs that paint a window on the screen if an
error is encountered.

At random times the Affirmative unit will freeze for a random period of
time when trying to display the error window. It does not happen with
Client Access. Eventually the warning screen will display it.

It does not happen to the same program/user/unit every time. When it
does happen, there are no waits or locks on the i5. There are no entries
in any log or message queue.

This started happening when we moved to the M15.

Has anyone run into something like this?

Thanks.
