AFAIK, most cell phone service providors have an email-->TXT message gateway.

For example, an email sent to 5555555555@xxxxxxxxx will show up with
as a text message on the Verizon Wireless phone with 555-555-5555 as a
phone number.

Thus: all you need to do is send a short (usually a max of 160 chars)
email to the appropriate address.
