1 - Always, and without exception, use a different volume id on each tape.
I've seen those who came from S/36 environment use a volume id of IBMIRD
on each tape. Step 2 will explain why.
2 - PRTERRLOG TYPE(*VOLSTAT) VOLTYPE(3590)
VOLTYPE may change based on your environment. 3590 does work for all
fashions of LTO tape cartridges also.

We run a modification of PRTERRLOG on a nightly basis.
PRTERRLOG TYPE(*VOLSTAT) VOLTYPE(3590) VOLSTAT(*DLT)
This will delete the statistics after printing them. This is done at end
of backup. It also transmits the output, via email, to the operator (and
others who back her up). The archives has a nice IBM recommendation as to
how many errors constitutes recommending retirement of the cartridge.
If you notice a lot of errors on tape id THU01 from week one of Thursday
night's backup, then you can handle that.

From the report:

Volume ---Temporary Errors--- --------M Bytes--------
ID Read Write Read Written
0 0 1 1
W3V1S5 0 0 1 46258
indicates media replacement is recommended
indicates media replacement criteria should be checked
