3 to 10 times a week the "Oracle/windows/unix" side of the house sends out outage emails because of a failure of one type or another. The last unplanned IBM i outage was 4+ years ago, the last application outage notification was in January. This stability is, by itself, worth quite a few headachs.

We have some programs/applications that have been running, unchanged, for 10 to 15 years. Yes, most of them are "crap" (even ones I wrote) but they do what they were designed to do and we don't have time to redesign/rewrite applications that work. So having a non-conforming database that allows us to write "standard RDBMS" programs while allowing the thousands of existing programs to use those "non-standard" interfaces is exceptional.
