Alan, make sure you have all the HPT PTF's. They rarely ever get on the
cume's. You'll have to search for them.

AFPU will make a much, much simpler AFP overlay than you'll get by
printing a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet through the AFP Workbench print
driver and then building an OVL object from that source. What we've seen
with unpatched HPT is that HPT runs out of room in its memory segment
while converting a complex piece of AFP / MODCA. There are PTF's to fix
this. The AFPU-generated AFP will still work much more quickly with less
resources.

IBM Support can help you find the PTF's if you describe the problem as
you have here.

I may have to consider using IBM AFP utilities.
How can I tell if that is installed on the system??

That doesn't sound "too complex" to me.

I've done similar overlays starting with a old 9402-400 ( 50 CPW or
something?) Printing to both an IBM Infoprint 40 *IPDS printer and
an HP Laserjet (via HPT).

One issue you may have is getting the shading exactly where you
wanted it. When I tried to do this with MS Word and/or Excel I
simply couldn't get the positioning exact enough. I was trying to
shade every other line for a spool file that was to be printed at 8
lpi.

I ended up using IBM AFP utilities, a green screen application that
lets you design overlays. With that, I could exactly position the
shading.

This was 10+ years and two jobs ago, but the overlays are still in
use.

I cannot remember exactly how long I've left the spool file in a
PND
state,
but I'm sure its been for quite a few hours.
If this is in fact the problem, then the overlay is definitely out
of
the
question.
As for your question of the overlay being overly complex ---- I
used
excel
to create a grid in landscape format, with every other row being
shaded.
What I may do is to create a simple overlay (of maybe a couple of
rows
in
a
grid format) and see what happens there.

Unfortunately, the same result occurred , the status is PND

PND just means the writer is "thinking". This can indicate HPT is
active, or overlays are being merged, etc. Perhaps the overlay is
overly complex? Does it NEVER print or are you just impatient?

Simon Coulter.
