Note that if you're running a separate dedicated machine, the cost of electricity consumption alone may match or exceed what the inexpensive hosting firms charge. Many providers also include functionality that you'd have to duplicate - backups, alternate restore environment/BCDR, UPS/generator, good HVAC, etc.
Personally, giving up some administrative control is well worth eliminating all of the operations & infrastructure issues.

i host my own web site. it's not that hard and is inexpensive. i have a
DSL connection and a static IP address from my ISP (AT&T). purchased a
domain name and use zoneedit.com for a DNS server it's free for up to 5
domain names and easy to use. you can get XAMPP from apachefriends.org
which is also free and includes MySQL, PHP, Apache web server, PERL and
more. it's very easy to install and setup and you don't have to pay
monthly fees!

I've been using a Yahoo!-hosted domain for several years. Not the
greatest, but it is inexpensive at $12 a month.

It started out as Simplenet.com but Yahoo! bought them some years ago.
There are some free services, I believe, but this has worked for me and
for under $150 a year it's not worth any effort to move.
