I can't help with the mechanics, but I'd be interested in the business scenario - are you talking about someone sitting in an Excel document, having it open, and as data changes on the i, the spreadsheet columns flicker and jump on their desktop?

Or is it more of the user wanting the very latest data whenever they open the worksheet?

I thought there were some sorts of realtime links using client access that would pull down data from the host when you opened the spreadsheet, but I may be mistaken. If not, an option is to rebuild the spreadsheet each time a file event occurs and then have the user copy the current to a local folder and open the copy.
