Lance,

It's a commonly asked question, but with compression, tape devices, auto
loaders, 24x7 operations staff, SAVFs and now virtual tape, and also
possibly the phases of the moon, I gave up on this long ago.

Kidding aside, the best I came up with was using the Work with Lifetime
Statistics in service tools. But that report only has any meaning if
you give each physical media a unique volume ID. Oh, and even if you
already are doing that, you have to delete the old volume ID's
information first, then run the backup, and then run the report.

Almost makes me yearn for the 10.5" reel-to-reel media where you could
look it and say "Gee, that backup just barely fit."

Is there a way to determine how full a tape is?

I would like to know if our nightly backups are about to go over to a
second tape, but I do not see an option on DSPTAP or DMPTAP or anything
else I can find to determine this.

We do the equivalent of a Go Save 21 (minus a few libraries) every
night.

We do not have BMRS.

Thanks,
Lance
