Yup, my thought exactly. I use NAT and have nothing but problems
serving FTP to the outside world.

There are solutions for that:

a) Use a good Firewall appliance. Not SOHO stuff.
b) Use external, un-nated IP-Adresses in your DMZ

You'll need to do a and b to solve all the issues you might have.
