This is a good solution but is a static one - I suggest simply pulling down the 4 columns and put an Excel formula in the 5th column, if it is simple enough - or use an Excel macro to populate that 5th column. This way, you don't have the double-clutch of doing something on iSeries, then doing something separate but related in Excel.

Now I know it is possible to use ODBC to run a command on iSeries.

It might even be possible to take the formula required for column 5 and make it an expression in a SELECT - then the MS Query technique works well, or the iSeries Access add-ins

one option is to use sql on the 400 to format your
5 fields and create a file,

then use Excel with the iSeries "add-in" options and
simply import the 400 file "as is" column for column
straight into your excel sheet, so all the work is
done by your sql on the 400. much better response time
this way.

and if you save the odbc routine in excel, all you have to
do is click on it to run it and refresh the entire worksheet
with a new file from the 400
