one option is to use sql on the 400 to format your
5 fields and create a file,

then use Excel with the iSeries "add-in" options and
simply import the 400 file "as is" column for column
straight into your excel sheet, so all the work is
done by your sql on the 400. much better response time
this way.

and if you save the odbc routine in excel, all you have to
do is click on it to run it and refresh the entire worksheet
with a new file from the 400
