Well, Tommy...

I think that Tim and the folks in the Jungle get it right many many more
times than they get it wrong...and I think they've gotten it right again...

Neil and I have and will disagree about how usefull/useless Haines was, but
that's a minor point.

There MAY be a 7.1 but not many people are expect much after that(hell
(IBM'ers and high level insiders) weren't expecting anything after
6.3!)...and yes, it'll be around for a while, but then, so are OS/2, NT,
etc...anyone wanna bet their mortgage on them? Anyone remember what
happened to the S/36 environment once IBM wanted to get rid of it? Or what
HP has done to MPE in favor of a higher services generator like HP/UX?

Yes, the development budget and actual developers have been cut WAY WAY
back...some people are referring it to walking through empty halls...people
who used to be dedicated to i5/os(whatever), now are being dedicated to
z/os, linux, "blue topia", AIX/L, and other project, and the ones that are
still on i5/os are told that it's a small percentage of their
responsibility...

Neil did get a quote wrong, as I recall... As I recall hearing it from the
same connection in IBM that he did, Gerstner told Jarosh something more like
"Do not GROW this product line, MANAGE IT'S DECLINE"... And, frankly, if
you look at the trends and evidence from that time period, that's EXACTLY
what you see... And every GM that I've mentioned this to has not denied it.

Negativism? If you think so, then it's time to get your heads out of the
sand(or elsewhere), smell the coffee and take a look and real review of the
market place and declining market share...everyone else(ESPECIALLY IBM
INSIDERS!) realizes this...IBM is still following Gerstner's orders...

IBM isn't growing the application base that runs on i5/os...IBM isn't
pushing applications on i5/os... IBM is a services company and they're more
interested in pushing tools and services...preferably on platforms that by
their design and nature require a higher level of services for the same
comparable amount of functionality...

Face it: You can't run unix, windows, linux, etc., lights out like you can
iSeries(or whatever).

And, yes, I don't like it either!

FWIW i never hang my hat on anything said at IT Jungle. too many times
have i looked at their viewpoint/stance and found it to be total hogwash.
IMO no one should give them any credence whatsoever. should they start
writing *good* credible articles i'll start listening...

Thanks,
Tommy Holden

Neil Palmer writes in ITJungle this week:
"...I really want to believe that there is a "next 20 years" as Mark said
at
COMMON, but looking back at the past year, we've seen the i5/OS
development
budget progressively chopped from around $130 million to around $28
million.
..."

http://www.itjungle.com/tfh/tfh050508-story04.html

Is that accurate? $28 million budgeted for working on enhancements to the
base OS? Does that number include bug fixes and PTFs?

With that kind of a limited budget, I question if there will be a v6r2.
