I guess I have one more question. So then I need to run both the new job
which changes the default and the old job which submits the newjob each
night

No, SBMJOB will submit an entirely new job that won't do anything except
change its own default wait time to 2.

You need to write another CL that will:

PGM
CHGJOB JOB(*) DFTWAIT(2)
SAV DEV('/qsys.lib/tap03.devd') +
OBJ(('/dtmdir' *INCLUDE)) +
ENDOPT(*UNLOAD)
ENDPGM

and do a SBMJOB CMD(CALL NEWSAVE) JOB(DIRSAVE)

But then you have to maintain two programs.

I always like to make such CL programs "smart" enough to detect if
running interactive, and just submit themselves to run in batch. ;-)
