That confirms what I knew to be the case. In the normal course of operations, if the user wanted to rerun a failed application and put the most recent backup in place, they would most likely delete MEMBER and rename MEMBER1 to MEMBER. That very possibility wipes out any hope that I would always get MEMBER when *First was specified.

For the applications which I am writing for the client using their archiving scheme, I will need to place overrides into the CL to insure that I am using the named member of a file and not an earlier-created backup copy.

Again, thanks. I have no one in the office with whom I can discuss these issues. By writing my thoughts, solutions present themselves... with your help.
