May not answer all your questions, but...

If you are running somewhat current versions of i then I suggest that you
go ahead and order the V6R1 upgrade for your boxes and install the V6R1
iSeries Access for Windows. V6R1 is a completely different animal than
V5R4 and earlier. It uses the Windows Installer instead of Selective
Setup and some other stuff. V6R1 should access V5R4 machines just fine.
Mine does.

Upgrading from V5R4 to V6R1 iSeries Access can be a trick. With the usual
request that you be a local admin, shutdown any virus software, etc, also
comes that if you are not at the latest and greatest service pack of
iSeries Access then it's a pretty safe bet that the upgrade will fail.
Mine did and that was using GA software. Cure is uninstall and reinstall.
Luckily I kept all of my 5250 definitions but lost all my connections.
Losing a connection may not be big shakes to those using a single lpar but
for those like me that have multiple and having to remember which ones use
Kerberos, which ones default to Windows password, etc, can be a hoot.

We typically have our PC geeks install iSeries Access. No big problem.
Should be even better with V6R1 using the standard Windows Installer. Just
remember to drill into them the install method that gets all the parts of
iNav that you want. There are scripts available for large rollouts but
I've not used them. We tend to ensure that WS names are somewhat
specific, although I think its just PC name plus S1, S2, etc. Making sure
that the combination of PC name and S1 fits into application size rules (I
think 8 char or less).
