While I agree that IBM have a tendency to do this (they apparently haven't noticed that they got rid of all the SEs who used to spread this knowledge) there was quite a lot of fuss about Rexx when it was first launched. Indeed IBM heavily hinted that it might replace CL in the long term. However, in those days the machines were a lot slower and Rexx was not built on ILE but rather the old OPM model - which was not a good fit for a dynamic scripting language. The performance was so bad on many systems that the term "Rexx is a dog" became a common description. By the time the performance of both Rexx and the hardware improved to current levels we had moved outside of IBM's 12 - 18 month promotional window and they were off and focussing on other new and sexy things.

I wonder if it is the arrival of PHP that has triggered the interest in scripting languages on the "i" and subsequently a renewed interest in Rexx?
