If the behavior has changed then someone needs to update the V6R1, V5R4, etc. Information Centers (for instance http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/systems/scope/i5os/topic/cl/endjobabn.htm) , and presumeably the help text for ENDJOBABN, as they indicate the next system end will be marked abnormal (though not a "full" abnormal).

Rob, I see folks have given you pointers on how to do what you
want. But, it's been several releases since the behaviour you
describe in the snipped section should have stopped. If this has
happened on 5.4 or 6.1 for you, please report it to IBM as a
defect.
