When you backup an IBM i partition running on a JSxx Power Blade the
following happens according to what I learned from the folks at IBM.

- You define a virtual CD/DVD drive in the VIOS server and share that with
the IBM i partition
- You backup the IBM i partition to the OPT* devices
- You then sign on to the VIOS partition and copy the media images to tape
in VIOS format (I'm betting these are TAR files but I haven't seen them
yet)

There is not a compatible tape media between the VIOS and the standard
System i or Power Servers servers at this time and there is not a way to
directly attach a tape drive to the IBM i partition on the JSxx Blade.

In theory you could mount a network file system to the IBM i partition,
save the server to virtual tapes on the mounted file system, then unmount
the file system and mount it to a standard System i or Power System
server.

My main point is to make sure you plan for data movement and backups when
you consider a BladeServer implementation right now. Remember that this is
"release 1" of the capability. It will get better and work the way we need
it to.

Re: The New Power Equation: Power = i + p

Kendall,
I do not completely understand.
Are you saying that if I run I5/OS (or whatever the new name will be) on a
Blade and do a SAVxxx to tape, that I can not restore that tape on any
other system running I5/OS at the same or higher release?
Also the reverse, that I can not restore a tape from another (non Blade)
system saved by I5/OS to a Blade?

Or is this regarding backup/restore of other OS's?

Thanks,

If you look at blades, make sure you understand the backup and recovery
capabilities that are available. It looks like right now the blades can't
read a tape created by a standard model. I don't believe the blades can
create a tape that can be read by the standard models either at this time.

I've been assured by IBM that they are working on fixing this but it's
something you have to be aware of for the time being.
