The hardware is not "essentially" the same, it *IS* the same, period.

I sat in on Dr. Frank Soltis session in the afternoon. One person asked him what new functionality the i people got. The answer was, essentially, nothing. What the i people got was a lot better pricing. What the p people got was new functionality, the ability to run Unix, i, Linux, etc on their hardware, which we already had.

The bottom line, per Soltis, is that the System p got folded into the System i. But we don't tell the System p people that. :) System p has been ~75% of power 5 boxes shipped, System i ~25% of power 5 boxes shipped. And though the revenue for System i has been down over the last year, the *number* of boxes shipped is up.

There was concern expressed that the i would get lost in p. Like China being the most conquered nation on earth, yet, by sheer size, they just absorb everything. Can you say Borg?

The new hardware comes with a 3-year warranty (ie, no maint). In the morning announcement, it was stated the price point will be such that anyone with an i5 520 or older should be able to lease the brand new hardware for less than the *maintenance* on their existing hardware. Yowza. I have not yet looked for any pricing.
