I think that could work, if you follow Michael's suggestion of using AS to name the fields to the same name for both selects. Then you can use the same ORDER BY clause for all three possible statements.

As for your other idea about using field positions, I'm not sure if that works in the select clause. In any case, it seems like a maintenance nightmare waiting to happen, so if you can use the fields by name I'd go that route.
