i5/OS is 64bit, but PASE can run both 32bit and 64bit binaries. Given
a variety of variables, the 32bit or the 64bit binary might be
slightly faster or slower. I have no idea why the mysql foks publish
two binaries.

Especially when the "Installing and configuring MySQL for i5/OS" redbook
has the following highlighted:

"Attention: You must select i5/OS (POWER, 64-bit) for each SAVF or TAR
download option."

Doesn't much matter anyway--TAR couldn't write the output from the 32-bit
version either.

Why not download Zend's PHP. You get a much easier to install package of
MySQL. Even if you do not want to use PHP you can still run MySQL.

Because it didn't work either. Anytime I try (either through Zend's
install, MySQL's install, or directly from the command line in QSH) the
following fails:
QOpenSys/usr/bin/tar -xf /tmp/mysql_i5os_install.tar. It will start, but
inevitably it aborts with: "tar: 0511-197
mysql-5.0.45-i5os-power-64bit/bin/mysqld-debug: Cannot write data
extracted with the tar command. Thre is not enough space in the file
system."

Since I have close to a terabyte of free DASD, I'm at a loss. So is Zend.
So is IBM. We're at V5R4M5 with all the latest PTF groups.
