I have a 9406 MMA with 3 partitions and one tape drive. I have designed the HMC scripting to move the allocation of the tape drive from one LPAR to another when the backup needs to be done.

The user has a need to use the tape drive at non scheduled times. If some one has developed the scripting to do this within the CLP program structure, I would like to discuss the scripting with you.

Hi Dave

I've done this on our i550 to move the tape drive between four LPARS
using CL commands to run the move. It makes use of SSH between the
System i and the Linux based HMC to run commands on the HMC direct
from the System i without the need for passwords. I've written up the
details and put the source code on my site:

http://www.dbg400.net/cgi-bin/twiki/view/DBG400/RunningHMCCommands

There's one gotcha that I only discovered recently - the user profile
on the System i needs to be eight characters or less. I did find it
mentioned after searching on the obscure error SSH reported, but it
took a while. Other than that the process has been working fine for
the last year.

I'd be interested in any feedback, particularly if you can extend the
commands to provide examples for others.

Regards, Martin
