You guys are getting a little confused.

*AFPDS is basically a superset of *IPDS. Everything you can do in *IPDS
you can do in *AFPDS plus
*AFPDS can do lots more.

I've _never_ been clear on this issue.

If nothing else, an element of IPDS that I haven't seen outside of
IPDS is the ability of the printers to inform the system of printing
status. Spooled files could be sent to 'intelligent' printers to be
printed when the printer has completed previous print jobs; the
files might be 'queued' inside the printer. The notification that
printing completed wouldn't appear for the user until that spooled
file physically finished printing.

I've often felt that the 'intelligent' communication between printer
and system was a kind of defining characteristic of IPDS regardless
of AFPDS content.

Actually, *IPDS spool files sent to a TYPE(*IPDS) AFP(*NO) printer lack the intelligence you're
talking about.

*SCS, *IPDS, *AFPDS spool files sent via the PSF/400 licensed program to a TYPE(*IPDS) AFP(*YES)
printer have the intelligence provided by two-way communication you describe. From the IBM AS-400
Printing V Redbook:

"The IPDS data stream generated by the AS/400 system (when the printer file
device type parameter is set to *IPDS) is not the full IPDS data stream. Many functions are not
included in this subset, including the use of external resources such as fonts or page segments.

The IPDS data stream generated by Print Services Facility/400 (PSF/400)
includes the full IPDS set of commands and supports a two-way dialog between
PSF/400 and the printer (Figure 7)."

To get close with ASCII printers....DO NOT USE REMOTE WRITERS!!!!

Instead, use SNMP or IPP. PJL would be the third choice.

Note I highly recommend the IBM AS-400 Printing V Redbook, it does a great job of explaining IPDS vs.
AFPDS.

Charles
