is there, is surely verified by i5/OS development to be functional
_only_ for the purpose(s) used by the i5/OS itself; at least until such
time that someone can find some definitive documentation of what its
supported features are.

Actually, there are no supported features whatsoever. The IBM documentation
says it is "freeware" and is unsupported. So it's not even an undocumented
API; it's definitely something IBM could conceivably pull the plug on
without warning. See the bottom of this page:
