The licensiing, for any 3rd party software running on your box, could have all sorts of very expensive upgrade fees, for it to work with different box serial #. It also may need some upgrade to work right on later IBM OS. We have in the past had troubles with peripherals that worked on one OS version but not the next.

We had a BP upgrade once in which they miscalculated the speed of processors we needed, and amount of memory. It was eventually fixed at the BP expense at the insistence of IBM. This came about thanks to one of IBM's seminars with 300 customers, a road show about new features ... they asked who had the new box & my hand was one raised. They called on me to say how I liked it. I said you do NOT want to hear my opinion on how disappointed we are. Well they did. I said that it was vapor ware, much slower than the prior box, and I have the performance data from before and after to prove that.

I had been bitching to IBM and to the BP for months, privately, before that IBM seminar, and failing to communicate sufficiently effectively that we had a problem that needed fixing. My remarks at the IBM seminar took the urgency of fixing our situation to a higher management level. IBM now looked at our performance figures and could see in black and white what I had been telling the BP.

There are people who think I misinterpret data coming from the OS.
Maybe I do, sometimes.
I only wish I was good enough to be able to decipher from the data if the problem is the processor, CPU, speed of memory, or whatever.

We do not have that kind of problem at present, only undergassed CPW, and using up resources faster than I find time to clean up the system.

Also,

Assuming worst comes to worst, and we do a box swap...taking all the DASD, IOAs, IOPs, ect. from the
old box and putting them in the one the faster processor came out of; any gotchas to be aware of?

Thanks!
Charles
