First IT area that I worked in was a local insurance office. Out of an
older home that was remodeled. All carpeting. Static was so bad that I
wouldn't touch the keyboard without first grounding myself with a wooden
ruler that had one of those metal edges. I ended up making a diluted
spray of water and fabric softener and spraying on the carpet. Patch
helped but I still discourage carpet. In the winter I pick up enough
static even with our set up. Encourage grounded metal doors on your
machine room. Keep them closed. That way when someone grabs the door
they'll ground themselves of the static picked up on the carpeting in the
outer office. Also will keep the casual user out after they jolt
themselves a few times. :-) (See BOFH series)
