Contract_Number, do you recommend creating a separate index with the

No. While I was discussing theory, the reality is the Primary Key is
implemented via an index, so it's there already. I'm sure if IBM comes
up with a way to do Primary Key w/out an index we'll have plenty of
warning. :)

i wouldn't...i can use the table as is in RPG, etc. why add the extra

overhead for an identical key??

I agree I wouldn't (see above). However, there should be no additional
overhead. The two indexes should share a common access path.
