I should add a little more info.

I don't have the proper cable, but I am able to run scripts using my PC when
power fails. So I set up a batch FTP program to connect to the i5 and run
the PWRDWNSYS command.

I've tested the command alone and it works great. Although *IMMED takes
about 3 minutes to shut down, and *CNTRLD takes over 15 minutes at least.

Brad, if you have the right interface cable between the iSeries and the
UPS, you can write a CL program to take appropriate action based on the
data reported to the iSeries by the UPS. For example, you might wish to
take no action initially when power fails and the UPS takes over. While
operating on battery power, you need to monitor for a low battery
message and then do a shutdown, probably immediate with a restart *NO.

Here's a link to the Info Center on using a program to control shutdown.

Yep, that's my question. Should I do an immediate or
controlled shutdown?
