Bradley,
I agree with David Trunbridge's comment regarding the 9-pin cable being
needed so that your i5 will sense when utility power has been lost and
you are now on UPS battery only.

Buy the Eaton Powerware UPS that IBM recommends and get the UPS that is
integrated with the i5.

When we installed a new System I model 520 in July 2006, the technician
mistakenly attached the Powerware 9-pin cable to the wrong port on our
System I, thus negating that communication feature. Our System I was
no longer able to sense when utility power failed, and did not send
messages to QSYSOPR. After we reattached the 9-pin cable to the correct
port on the i5, QSYSOPR began getting the messages again (examples from
2007-09-08 shown below).

Bradley,
I recommend that you talk to the Eaton people who make the Powerware UPS
to IBM's specifications for the System i.

Eaton's batteries have a 5-year warranty and last twice as long as other
UPSs because they recharge the battery with a technique (ABM technology
)that doubles its life.
The Eaton rep told me that they make

http://www.powerware.com/FAQManager/afmfaqs.asp
http://www.powerware.com/UPS/9125_UPS.asp
Increases battery life (compared to trickle-charged systems) and
optimizes battery recharge time through ABM(r) technology, resulting in
more up-time and fewer battery replacements
The lead-acid batteries typically used in a UPS are considered viable as
long as they can maintain backup times of at least half that of new
batteries. Virtually all other UPSs on the market today have batteries
that are constantly trickle charged. Those batteries reach the end of
their useful life in less than half the time of batteries that are
charged using ABM. ABM uses a three-stage charging technique that not
only doubles battery service life, but also optimizes battery recharge
time and provides up to a 60-day advanced notification of the end of
useful battery life.

Bradley,
Another advantage of buying the IBM-recommended Powerware UPSs from
Eaton is so that the i5 can sense when utility power has failed (via the
9-pin cable) and begin an orderly shutdown. If the 9-pin cable is not
attached, the i5 will not know when utility power is lost.

Here are the messages.
