I've since installed a stand alone 5250 emulator from Symtrax and am
experiencing the same problem which as has been suggested probably points to
some kind of LAN issue. I will investigate further.

Perhaps someone has inadvertently configured another device with the
same IP address. Then, when someone tries to use that device, it will
conflict with this PC on the network, and this could very likely cause
