Re: IFS and FTPing libraries

Others have had different experiences, but our 3570 started spending too
much downtime and we traded that out years ago.
There's a whole family of 358x tape drives. Basically they have different

tape formats, the higher the number the more stuff: LTO1, LTO2, LTO3, and

now LTO4. You're running an old machine with no upgrade path. Not sure
if you even have maintenance on it. If you decide on getting a used 3581,

that writes to format LTO1, then may I suggest that you get a pair? The
maintenance on them may be more than the cost of one on the used market.
Once every 6 months or so, flip them around to give them some exercise.
Remember, you are probably not running BRMS or some such thing so you'll
have to change the configuration within the tape drive from "random" to
"sequential". That refers to cartridge selection, not access of the data
on tape. Actually, we have a pair of LTO1's sitting around that we've not

used in some time. Boss wants to get a pair of LTO4's. Might even have a

bunch of used 3581 cartridges.
