And the part in the software installation manual about permanently
applying the ptf's that are on the V5R2 machine, and IPLing before the
install is a good idea. Temporarily applied ptfs can be removed because
they keep backups in a myriad of save files all over the system.
Permanently applying them beforehand removes these backups and frees a
significant amount of space.

And, if you do not permanently apply these ptf's, then these backups will
remain on your system until the end of time. Because permanently applying
at a higher release will NOT remove these old backups. Trust me, I've had
backup save files for ptf's that are really old. Want to check on your
system? Do a
WRKOBJ *ALL/QSF*
When was the last time you've seen a ptf that begins with SF? Ok, except
for InfoPrint Designer, which is still back at V4R5.

I used to have a policy to never run
APYPTF LICPGM(*ALL) APY(*PERM) DELAYED(*YES)
because I would have test ptfs applied and IBM rightly hates it when you
permanently apply those (impossible to uninstall without reinstalling the
product, and sometimes they do require you to uninstall test ptfs so they
can modify it and reissue it).
Also there are Domino situations that ask you to uninstall a ptf in one
product before upgrading a companion product. Like Domino versus
Sametime.

However I now apply all ptf's permanently for everything non Domino
related prior to upgrading the OS.
