BTW, where to look for a good concise explanation on how "threads" work
(especially on the i5?)

You might find that Pthreads (POSIX threads) is as good a place as any to start. I have not used threads in RPG and don't plan to. I recently used threads in PASE with Gnu C. Try http://www.yolinux.com/TUTORIALS/LinuxTutorialPosixThreads.html to get you started. Be advised that it's now difficult to find any AIX 5 binaries for GCC that you can load on your PASE, so you may be reduced to using the native IBM C compiler for this. I haven't tried to do anything with it myself, but IBM has their AIX Toolbox for Linux which might be applicable http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/p/os/aix/linux/index.html
