Booth, it's not the email that's the problem. It's the attachments IN the email that do it. Every major release of MS Office has introduced new file formats to support the new features in the products. If you've never had to open MS Office documents attached to email, then I envy the you...

Around here, Excel seems to be the preferred tool for the users to punish the MIS department.
USER: My monthly sales don't match my quarter sales...
IT: Where did your sales totals come from?
USER: This Excel from Fred and that Excel from Jo... Here, you figure it out...

If I were that boss I would just 'splain' "ain't going to happen". I
understand your fear, but I will say that I have never installed any of
the MS Office applications and I have never received an e-mail I can't
open and read. Never.

I can see a case for browser plug-ins. But again, I am just curious. I
can understand a boss not really caring if employees don't have the
latest web plug-ins.

Booth, no man is an island. Sure the user may not need the new feature.
But the first time they get an email attachment that's in a new version of
Word that they cannot open then they'll have to upgrade, regardless of
whether or not they need those new features.
