Tommy,

I didn't have any errors during my test.

I was using an internal DS on v5r2.

The system happily ignored the additional column.

Rob mentions that at leats for external DSs, the system used to happily ignores the additional columns
with an external DS also. But used to was the keyword.

Perhaps internal DS behavior was changed also?

Charles

if you are using select * and the file changes(column
addition, etc.) you'll like have to recompile...especially if
you are using internal DSes.
with external DS based on the file you are selecting from a
recompile is all that is necessary. with internal DS you'll
have to add the new column to the DS or you'll get some SQL
errors....

Thanks,
Tommy Holden

So I've learned that SELECT * doesn't have to mean a
recompile, but I
think I'll still continue
specifying specific columns names in most cases.

I agree it's good practice to select only the columns you need, just
wanted to make sure I'd not missed something else. Thanks for testing
it.
