Agreed and well stated! Wonder if anyone's listening in IBM land?

Pete and I have talked about this. The problem isn't that you can't
start a 5250 session its HOW you start them. If you are working directly
on the HMC and you start up a partition you get a check box that says
'Crank up a console session?' that you may use. When you are attached to
the HMC remotely then the box is grayed out and you need to open said
session manually with your favorite 5250 emulator. Once opened it works
perfect and you soon don't care how it got opened.

So all the function IS there it's just not as friendly as we both agree
it should be.

Just so IBM doesn't get the idea that we should be FORCED through the
GUI to get a console session we shouldn't. We like the ability to open a
5250 session to the HMC, pick an i5, pick a partitioin, and get a
console session but we wish the check box was allowed in addition to
this through the GUI.

I was using the term consoles as yes, 5250 sessions. What we would all
call
DSP01 for each partition. Only on the actual HMC itself can you start
them,
but as Rob said in a previous note, you can connect to them and they will
start.

I would hope in future releases of the HMC code, that you would have an
option to start these consoles automatically at startup.

Pete,

Could you please expand on that a little because I am not familiar with
the HMC?

When you say "console" and "i5/OS LPAR Consoles" I am not exactly sure
what you mean. Are we talking about a 5250 session that would typically
be DSP01? If these cannot be started remotely that would seem to be a
big deficiency. Could they be made to start themselves somehow when the
HMC boots up, perhaps via standard Linux/UNIX facilities?

Incidentally, our system will be a single i5/OS image (no LPARs).

Thanks,
-Marty

The interface is exactly the same, but One big difference is that you
can
only start a console session from the local HMC, and you can't start
your
console (these are the i5/OS LPAR Consoles) sessions when you connect
remotely.
