Well, I didn't opt for the cable on the i5.. was told I didn't need it.

I've read where some folks just hook it up to their PC, and then run scripts
to shut down the i5 when the UPS says to power down. That sounds like a
pretty cool idea.

I don't have either, but the 1500 looks impressive, with
enough for your pc, i5, router, plus has db9 comm port
to talk to the i5 (not sure if cable supplied). The smaller only
has USB. I think when the APC i have dies (the batteries
die in the 3-4 year range..) I'll switch to Tripp-Lite..

Would something like either of these fit the bill?

Just looking for advice on what I need to look for in a UPS, and a good
place to get one. Sams? Best Buy? Office MAx? Online? NewEgg?

I have to admit that I still don't have the machines set up correctly to
softly failover, but since I installed two Tripp-lite UPSs (one for my
System i's and one for my PCs) I haven't had a burp. This is through
brownouts, near-strikes, flickering power, and even a 3-year-old
kicking the
plug.

They're not cheap (I think they list in the $600-700 range), but you get
what you pay for. You could probably go for one, depending on
your network,
and maybe even something a little smaller, depending on the number of
non-System i devices you plan to keep going during a blackout.

I've burnt out quite a few $100 UPS boxes. First couple of
brownouts, they
seem to get dead quick. They do make great doorstops, though!
