Working through the list here and making sure I am ready to roll through this upgrade to V5R4M0. Following the counsel of Pete, Larry and Rob, the HMC prep is as follows:

1. Change the firmware update policy to "HMC managed" using ASMI (GADS! Yet ANOTHER essential userid and password to track!)

2. Upgrade the HMC to 6.1.2 in the first jump using instructions I found here: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/eserver/v1r3s/index.jsp?topic=/ipha5/fixeshmc_upgrades.htm
I have the CD's (3) with Pkgid: MH00915 which says "HMC V6R1.2 Update" so I assume these are the ones I need to use. This will update both HMC and FSP Firmware (now that the firmware is HMC managed) correct? I can just install this update with no affect on the i5, correct?
3. Upgrade the HMC to V7R3 plus the latest patches (on order right now). Again, the i5 is sitting at V5R3M0 and won't be affected by this update, correct?

After the HMC is taken care of, I can upgrade the i5/OS to V5R4M0, taking the time to read through the memo to users and making sure the latest CUME's and Groups are applied.

If all that is correct, I plan to upgrade the HMC next week and then upgrade the i5/OS a few weeks later. I'll let you know how it all goes.
