I did a hybrid.

To get the records from the file with the matching format, I used an
embedded SQL Select.

To get the records from the file with the different format, I used
traditional I/O. In the same program. And the only field names I had to
'mention' by name in the program were the 2 that I had to assign a default
value.

Works like a charm.
