As I understand this, with TN5250 Enhanced, IBM allows the profile of the telnet session to control how the device description is supposed to look. When OS400 acquires a device for a session, it might change the device to match the incomming session request. One device might be changed to support 132 column mode, for example...

Subject: When do new QPADEV* devices get created

I have a strange occurrence that just started today with my QPADEV*
devices. Though I have plenty of devices available for use (that have
auto-configed
themselves over the years), I have new QPADEV* devices being created today.

The problem I have is that these are being created with *PUBLIC *USE
authority since the auditors had us change QCRTAUD to *USE years ago,
and apparently *PUBLIC needs *CHANGE on these device descriptions or they
get the message "CPF2241 user profile xxxxx not authorized to *DEVD yyyyy"
when they signon.

But I don't understand why new devices would be getting created at all.
There are plenty out there that have worked for years. Most all of them
are in a VARIED OFF state, but the best
I can tell this normal.

Any thoughts on what would cause new devices to be getting created today?
(BTW, this is a V4R3 system).
