No. Don't delete the logicals. Remove the LF members

Thanks all for your response....
I think it might be the number of access paths that makes the difference.
But if I remove these LFs and create them after, I will have to recompile a
lot of programs that use these LFs. Am I right?

Best Regards.

Remove the logical file members first. Add them back in when the physicals
are finished. You probably have many logicals where the key includes the
company code. The machine is thrashing itself to update the index areas
along with the data itself.

this is one of those tasks that just screams "USE SQL!!!!"

other than that....another thing that can & will slow you down is join
LFs....

any number of things. Like, has anyone done a
RGZPFM FILE(MYLIB/MYPF) MBR(MYMBR) KEYFILE(MYLF MYMBR)
to sort it in any particular order? That can help blocking.

What makes such a big difference?

We are updating a field (company code) in some very large physical files.
These PFs are created by DDS, without journaling.
We use the similar RPG program (very simple, just read and update) on them
and the system environment is exactly the same.
One batch job for each PF. Some jobs can update more than 5 millions
record
per hour, some can do 1 millions
per hour, while some can only do 100 thousands per hour. At first, I
think
the reason might be the number of dependent logical files.
But then I found a PF with 36 dependent LFs is 10 times faster than a PF
with 30 dependent LFs. Any clues for me?
Thanks...

Best Regards.
