Thank you for the explanation. I had been counting the characters, which came
out wrong.

The reply list entry wroks nicely. However, there were two CPA3394 messages
within a few miliseconds of each other lat night. Both were responded to with
an 'I". But, both messages were for the same device. Does this make any
sense??

DSPMSGD CPA3394 /* then, option 2=Field data shows: */

Message ID . . . . : CPA3394
Message file . . . : QCPFMSG
Library . . . . : QSYS
Message text . . . : Load form type '&4' device &5 writer &1.

Display Field Data
Field Data Type Length
&1 *CHAR 10
&2 *CHAR 10
&3 *CHAR 10
&4 *CHAR 10
&5 *CHAR 10

From the above, the device is &5, and that occupies positions 41 to
50. The second 'M' in the ten-byte name for &5 is in position 8, so the
first 40 characters [taken by &1 to &4] plus 8 more makes 48; i.e. the
request to make the comparison of 'M' to the expected position should be:
ADDRPYLE CMPDTA(M 48)

I apparently am having a bad math day. In the message below, what position is
