What I *am* missing, however is the "schema checking" that the EDI
translator provides.

Depending on who your trading partners are, this could easily be your cost
justification. Back in the day when EDI was a part of my life I became very
familiar with the term "charge back". Charge Backs, as I learned, are a way
that large organizations buying from you can make money off of you:-) For
instance, if you incorrectly sent data to them (i.e. shipping
acknowledgement had 1 line of 500 that was slightly/arguably incorrect) they
could say "we aren't going to pay the entire invoice amount because you
screwed up". When the invoices are many thousands of dollars and the charge
backs are potentially thousands, you can all the sudden justify an EDI
software package that has logging and documentation of transactions up the
wazoo so you can go back to that trading partner and prove things. Note
that you should also be able to do this through your VAN (if I remember
correctly). We had one guy that 1/2 of his time was mostly spent
fighting/negotiating charge backs. You could end up having to hire an
additional warm body just to keep up with what the EDI package gave you out
of the box.
