What would be a good "preventative" measure, to prevent this scenario
from ever occuring?

Just replace the batteries, whether they need it or not, say once a
year
or every 18 months?

The original batteries are good for a bit over 2 1/2 years. We lease our
boxes, so the battery issue is a regular reminder that migration time is
about here again. :)

The system itself just uses a countdown starting somewhere north of 1000
and sends a warning message when it hits 90 or so. (If you dig in the
archive a bit, someone posted a way to peek at the counter although I
don't know if worked prior to v5.)
